Fresh off the back of yesterday's S1cknote invitational comes the Across the Gate - Marah Open. With Band of Baddies and Surreal Gaming not in attendance, this was a great opportunity for other teams in the scene to shine. Destructive Influence took Group A with a quick 2-0 and eliminated Hype Train in the semifinals to advance to the finals. In Group B, a pick-up team that included members from Surreal Gaming and Based was formed in the name of For Fendrilion. The team swept their group 2-0, eliminated Last Project in the semifinals and defeated Destructive Influence 2-0 in the finals to win the tournament. In the third place match, Last Project was successful against Hype Train, winning 1-0.

The group stages of the S1cknote Invitatonal 6 saw sixteen teams battle it out for four positions in the brackets, with one team per group advancing. All four teams managed to cleanly sweep their opponents. The biggest surprise came from Group D where heavily favored Based was defeated by Destructive Influence and eliminated from the tournament.

Tournament favorites Surreal Gaming and Band of Baddies ended up on opposite sides of the bracket, and both managed to eliminate their opponents in only two games. Destructive Influence forfeited the 3rd place match to Rare Elixir EU, leaving only the finals to be played. Surreal Gaming had managed to get the better of Band of Baddies in their prior 3 tournament engagements, but the veteran team rallied for a strong 2-0 victory to win the S1cknote Invitational.

Since the unveiling of the Race to the Gate Tournament Series, a fervor has hit the competitive Dawngate eSports scene. New teams are popping up daily and old veterans are rearing their heads, all with their eyes on the $15,000 prize. With only a week to go until the first qualifier, many of the top teams are looking to get some tournament experience with this weekend's S1cknote Invitational 6.

Boasting over 16 registered teams, the S1cknote Invitational 6 is shaping up to be one of the best tournaments to hit the Dawngate in 2014. It is the first event to leverage the tournament realm, and the prize pool has been recently expanded to include gaming mice and mouse pads by Logitech. We'll be breaking down the top four teams to watch in today's S1cknote Invitational and some dark horses to look out for.

Each team is evaluated based on their recent results and historical trends, as well as their individual player potentials based on solo queue performance.

  • Surreal Gaming
  • Based
  • Band of Baddies
  • Live Free Dive Hard

Surreal Gaming

Earlier in the preseason, we often joked that Band of Baddies made each tournament a competition for second place. This was true until Surreal Gaming hit the scene. Consisting of former members of When's Para and ex-LoL professional Evaniskus, Surreal Gaming has looked unstoppable in their last three tournament showings. They went undefeated in the Moment of Valor, Parasite Post / Xanogate Invitational and the Dawngate Stars League Season 3 Open Invitational. All five players are amongst the best in their role, but look out for hard carries from their gladiators FeRust and Ac1dz and for their jungler and shotcaller Kusqt to be dictating the tempo of the game.

Players to Watch:

Anyone who occasionally loads the Dawngate Leaderboards will know the name Based. While relatively untested in the tournament scene due to scheduling conflicts, many top players I have spoken to are fearful of the Based line-up. Their star jungler and rank 1 player Yagachu is this week's featured Dawngate streamer. Shivy is an extremely competent ranged carry gladiator player, and Based's other gladiator DawnLu is renowned for having three accounts in the top 6 leaderboard positions. Ghosty and Elated round out the team with strong Tactician shaper rosters and high solo queue ratings. Needless to say, the skill potential of this team is very high and we're anticipating a strong showing and some one-sided games in the tournament.

Band of Baddies

No team has survived and excelled in the Dawngate eSports scene for as long as Band of Baddies. With three tournament wins and nine top three finishes, BoB is a team with a wealth of experience. Their jungler mcscrag has played an astonishing 2400 games of Dawngate and has constantly lived near the top of the leaderboard. Their star tactician Tulce is a pioneer and innovator in the Dawngate scene, constantly dictating the meta with his builds and shaper picks. While they have been recently slumping against powerhouse Surreal Gaming, this Band of Baddies roster is more than capable of stepping up and taking out any team in the tournament.

Players to Watch:

Live Free Dive Hard

Another veteran team in the Dawngate scene is Live Free Dive Hard. This team was very strong in the beginning of the pre-season, placing 3rd in the S1cknote Invitational 4, but haven't made any major appearances recently. However, with the Race to the Gate Announcement, the team is back and looking to be in good form. All five players are regulars to the Dawngate Leaderboards and have strong carry potential. I'm looking for their carries and mages to step up and snowball the game out of the laning phase to take out top teams like Surreal Gaming and Based.

Players to Watch:

Dark Horses: Rare Elixir NA / Rare Elixir EU

Rare Elixir NA and EU have 10 players on the Dawngate Leaderboard and have performed very well in the recent DGSL Open, Xanogate Invitational and Moment of Valor tournaments. They have essentially beaten every team that isn't Band of Baddies or Surreal Gaming, while falling to the juggernauts. Both teams are strong contenders for a top 3 finish if they are able to avoid SG or BoB, and are quite capable of stepping up and defeating these teams if playing at the top of their potential. Also of note, both teams have a solid reserve roster to pull from.
